We’ve all heard about the 1947 Roswell incident where the US military at first admitted to retrieving a downed flying disc, only to retract the admission one day later. While this historical UFO case has intrigued the public for decades, it pales in comparison to another UFO incident that occurred in South America precisely thirty years later. Like Roswell, the Colares Incident involved the Air Force. The difference between the two was the fact that the Brazilian UFO investigation didn’t involve a crash, but a series of encounters that resulted in physical injuries to as many as 400 citizens. It also led the Brazilian Air Force to conduct an investigation that spanned more than a year called Operation Prato. If you’ve never heard about it, don’t feel bad. Few of the citizens of Brazil know much more 47 years later.
Operação Prato (Operation Plate)
In 1977, the Brazilian Air Force became involved in one of the most enigmatic and fascinating cases in the history of UFO investigations. Known as Operação Prato or Operation Plate, this classified military operation was launched in response to numerous reports of unusual aerial phenomena in the northern Brazilian state of Pará, particularly on the island of Colares. The events that transpired during Operação Prato not only intrigued the military and local inhabitants but they have also remained a significant chapter in the global history of UFO studies. To this day, the operation remains shrouded in mystery, with the Brazilian military’s role, as well as the true nature of the phenomenon, remaining largely unexplained.
Background of Operação Prato
The story of Operação Prato began in the late summer of 1977 in the area of the Amazon jungle where reports of strange lights and flying objects began to circulate among the local population. At first, these were dismissed as mere rumors or misidentifications of conventional aircraft. However, the frequency and nature of the sightings grew increasingly alarming. In many cases, witnesses described objects in the sky that emitted beams of light, sometimes making direct contact with individuals on the ground. Several reports claimed that people had been injured by these mysterious beams. The local media picked up on these reports, amplifying public concern.
On October 5, 1977, the Brazilian Air Force formally initiated Operação Prato under the direction of Colonel Uyrange Hollanda, who was tasked with leading the investigation. The operation was launched in secret, and the details of the investigation were kept hidden from the public for many years. The Brazilian Air Force deployed a team of officers to investigate the sightings and determine if they were caused by extraterrestrial activity, military aircraft, or natural phenomena.
The Investigation
The primary goal of Operação Prato was to collect evidence of the alleged UFO activity in the region and identify any potential threats. The investigation was based out of the town of Colares, where the sightings were most concentrated. Local witnesses reported seeing unusual lights and objects in the sky, often at night, which seemed to move erratically and exhibit unusual behavior.

The investigators used a variety of methods to gather data, including eyewitness interviews, radar scans, and photographic evidence. One of the most remarkable aspects of Operação Prato was the use of military aircraft. The Air Force pilots who were part of the operation made numerous flights in the region to track and identify the mysterious objects. In some cases, they reported having direct encounters with these unidentified craft. The pilots described seeing objects with bright, intense lights that could move at incredible speeds and perform maneuvers that defied conventional aerodynamics.
Colonel Hollanda and his team were able to capture photographs and video of the objects, though most of the images taken have remained classified to this day. Due to the concrete visual evidence, the reports from military personnel, and testimonies from local civilians, the Brazilian Air Force determined that something unusual was occurring on the island.
Some individuals experienced burns, rashes, and other health problems that seemed to be consistent with radiation exposure. Those hit by the beams wound up with scars on their bodies that were caused by the lights in the sky. They named these lights “Chupa Chupa”(literally Sucker-Sucker) These reports were particularly alarming, since they suggested that the unknown objects might be capable of harming humans.
Eyewitness Testimony
Eyewitness accounts from the people of Colares played a significant role in the operation. Many local residents provided testimony about their encounters with the strange lights. Some described seeing glowing, spherical objects that hovered above the ground, while others reported that the lights followed them or their vehicles as they traveled through the area.

Several individuals spoke of seeing the lights emit a powerful beam of energy that caused intense pain or disorientation. One particularly well-known case involved a woman who claimed to have been struck by one of these beams. According to her account, she felt a sudden, intense heat and was temporarily paralyzed. She was left with burn marks on her skin, which were caused by the beam. Other witnesses not only reported similar encounters, they sought medical treatment for the burns they received.
The testimony from the people of Colares painted a picture of an area under siege by unknown aerial phenomena. These stories were consistent across various accounts, and many people in the region became fearful of venturing outdoors after dark, concerned that they might become targets of the mysterious lights. Some of the witnesses were so frightened by the encounters that they moved out of the area for good.
The Role of the Military
Throughout the investigation, the Brazilian Air Force maintained a high level of secrecy. The military’s involvement in Operação Prato was not made public at the time, and only a handful of military personnel were aware of the operation’s full scope. Colonel Hollanda and his team operated under the strictest confidentiality, and they were tasked with monitoring the situation without drawing undue attention to the investigation.
In a remarkable turn of events, some members of the military who were directly involved in the operation began to report strange occurrences themselves. Several pilots reported feeling uneasy and disoriented during their flights, and other members of Colonel Hollanda’s team experienced everything from equipment malfunctions and unexplained radar readings, to psychological effects after witnessing the phenomenon.

Colonel Hollanda himself became deeply invested in the investigation, and his personal accounts suggest that he was convinced of the legitimacy of the phenomenon. In an interview given years later, Hollanda admitted that the evidence collected during Operação Prato was compelling and that the military had not been able to identify the source of the mysterious lights. However, he also expressed frustration at the lack of solid evidence that could conclusively prove the existence of extraterrestrial technology.
Aftermath and Declassification
The Operation Prato investigation continued for more than a year, with the Brazilian Air Force monitoring the situation until December 1978. However, the operation was officially concluded when the sightings in the region began to diminish. By the time the investigation was over, the military had gathered a significant amount of data, but no definitive conclusions were reached.
In the years that followed, Operação Prato remained a closely guarded secret. The Brazilian military initially refused to release any information about the operation, and for decades, the full details remained classified. However, in 2004, the Brazilian government declassified a portion of the documents related to Operação Prato. These documents provided some insights into the military’s findings, though many details remain unknown. The release of these documents sparked renewed interest in the case and led to further speculation about the true nature of the events in Colares.
Conclusion
Operação Prato remains one of the most intriguing and mysterious military investigations into UFOs in history. The fact that the Brazilian Air Force took the reports seriously and devoted significant resources to investigating them speaks to the gravity of the situation. The testimonies from local witnesses, military pilots, and the photographic evidence all suggest that something truly unusual occurred in the skies over Colares during 1977–78.
To this day, Operação Prato is a subject of interest among UFO enthusiasts, military intelligence, and researchers alike. Many believe that the objects encountered by the military and civilians were extraterrestrial in origin. The operation remains a unique unsolved mystery that continues to inspire curiosity and wonder to this day.
